A hard, in-and-under onballer, Stephen Powell is a vital cog in the St. Kilda midfield. Drafted by the Western Bulldogs in 1996, Stephen played 80 reserve games, in a stint which reaped little reward for effort.

He was traded to Melbourne in 1999, and immediately proved the coaching staff at the Bulldogs wrong – finishing fourth in Melbourne’s best and fairest award in 2000. He suffered osteitis pubis causing him to miss the entire 2001 season, and despite another consistent year in 2002, he was picked up by St. Kilda with the first selection in the 2003 pre-season draft.

The Saints were immediate winners, with Stephen claiming a third place in the 2003 best and fairest award and playing 20 games in another fine year during 2004.
